Do we need another medical journal in the United Arab Emirates?

There have been several attempts to establish a quality medical journal in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Some of these attempts failed, but unfortunately, other attempts could not meet the expectations of the medical scientists and healthcare providers. The primary reason was an inability to achieve international standards of scholarly writings in the medical field. Furthermore, medical journals were not able to secure decent impact factors that could attract researchers to consider these journals as possible publishing portals.
Recently, the UAE has prioritized research and innovation in its strategic planning for the coming years and has invested heavily in creating an atmosphere that can support this strategy. Reciprocally, the University of Sharjah has also identified research and innovation as a priority in the last 5 years and has managed to raise its reputation nationally and internationally in these fields. In keeping with its reputation and performance, according to the Scopus data, the University of Sharjah has been ranked “number one” in the UAE in terms of its research productivity. Furthermore, according to the Times Higher Education (THE), medical and health sciences fields of the University of Sharjah are ranked “number one” in the UAE, fourth in the Arabic world, and 200th internationally. We feel that this is the right time to establish a new peer-reviewed medical journal of high standards that supports the vision of the country. Consequently, after a long discussion, we have established the structure and contents of the Advances in Biomedical and Health Sciences journal. We have worked hard to select outstanding national and international medical scientists in its Editorial Board.
Over the last two decades, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the incidence of chronic complex diseases in the region including diabetes mellitus, asthma, heart diseases, cancer, and immune-mediated diseases that need modern tools and techniques for their detection and effective treatment. These diseases can only be controlled through personalized medicine that needs excellent understanding of the molecular basis of diseases. The Advances in Biomedical and Health Sciences journal encourages those research-based manuscripts, which are related to local environment and community. I am sure that the scientific community will be interested to know more about these aspects. Recently, we had a unique experience in the diagnosis and management of the COVID-19 in the UAE. The journal’s editorial board will strive to highlight these aspects and will certainly disseminate this unique experience to the local and international community.
We will be open to consider research papers from the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, and hospital staff in different disciplines. The editorial board of the journal is committed to pursue rapid, scientific, focused, and constructive reviews of the submissions and will not compromise on the quality of the published work. We want to succeed but this cannot materialize without the engagement of the scientific medical community and without a close communication between editors, authors, and reviewers.
I hope that we will be able to meet the expectations of our authors and readers and will be able to contribute towards the advancement of scientific knowledge, which is particularly related to diseases inherent to our community.
